Given makes international u-turn

The veteran goalkeeper has made a u-turn on his original decision to retire from international football but will not be selected for the upcoming friendly in February

Given has been out of favour with club side Aston Villa so far this season, and the goalkeeper has told Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni that he is available for selection should he be required.

Trapattoni has turned to younger players since Given’s decision to retire with Sunderland’s Keiren Westwood replacing Ireland’s most-capped goalkeeper. (more…)

Thomas Vermaelen is confident that Arsenal can bounce back from their Premier Leaguedefeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup third round replay against Swansea on Wednesday night.

The Gunners lost 2-0 at home to Roberto Mancini’s men on Sunday after Laurent Koscielny’s dismissal left them with 10 men for 80 minutes in an uphill task with goals from James Milner and Edin Dzeko sealing the result before half-time.

Vermaelen and his depleted side managed to prevent any further goals and even managed to carve out a couple of chances for themselves in the second half, and though the club captain admits it was disappointing, he says that he is confident the team will respond well. (more…)

Macheda patient over Man United future

Manchester United striker Federico Macheda has admitted that if he wants to have a future at the club he will have to be patient and bide his time for a chance.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side currently sit at the top of the Premier League table with 55 points from 22 games so far this season, seven ahead of local rivals and reigning champions Manchester City.

The arrival of Robin van Persie from Arsenal in the summer has played a large part in that lead, with the Dutchman grabbing his 17th league goal of the campaign against Liverpool on Sunday. (more…)
