Newcastle boss Pardew: I had to substitute injured Cabaye in Reading defeat

The 27-year-old’s withdrawal was received with thunderous boos and jeers from the home supporters, but the Magpies boss insists he had little choice with the midfielder recently missing two months of action due to a similar problem.

And the 51-year-old manager suggested he needs to make new signings to boost the morale of the squad, who have slipped to just two points above the Premier League relegation zone.

“[Cabaye] said to me five minutes before he came off that he was injured, he was struggling with his groin,” he told reporters. “If one of the top players says that, you’re I’m not going to go against his wishes to come off.  (more…)

Sir Alex: Carrick having best-ever season


The former West Ham midfielder came on in the second half against his old club in midweek and helped the Red Devils regain control of the match at a time when the Hammers were on top. Boosted by Carrick’s introduction, Manchester United successfully protected their first-half lead to win the FA Cup third round replay 1-0.

Now the 31-year-old faces another of his former sides when United travel to White Hart Lane, hoping to avenge their 3-2 defeat to Tottenham earlier this season at Old Trafford.

Fletcher crucial for Scotland – Strachan

The Manchester United midfielder has suffered from a chronic bowel complaint which has kept him out for the best part of two years and has undergone surgery in a bid to finally clear the illness for good.

In a statement issued by the Scottish FA, Strachan said: “On behalf of the Scotland supporters, the national squad and backroom team, I wish Darren the best of luck in his recovery from the surgery that has been confirmed by his club.

“I spoke with Darren on Tuesday and know that the decision to have the operation has been taken in the interests of his long-term health and with the full backing of the medical staff at Manchester United. (more…)

The manager refuted suggestions that Newcastle could sign James Tomkins, and explained the club are looking for the defensive reinforcements needed amid a poor run of results.

The east London club were left short in defence after centre-back James Collins picked up a calf injury in Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Sunderland, while they were forced to field inexperienced Daniel Potts at left-back due to injuries to both George McCartney and Joey O’Brien.
