Dunne set for Aston Villa return

Aston Villa defender Richard Dunne is set to return to training this week having been out of action for the entirety of the season so far.

The 33-year-old has undergone three operations since August in order to fix groin and hip problems, and hasn’t played a competitive fixture since the Republic of Ireland’s final Euro 2012 game.

And Villans boss Paul Lambert is keen to get the former Manchester City stopper back into a team sorely lacking experience.

He told reporters “If you look when Richard did his shoulder, he only came back for a couple of games and then had the groin problem at the Euros.

“He’s not played much football for a year really. But the operation in America was successful and the main thing for everyone is to get him back fit.”

The veteran goalkeeper has made a u-turn on his original decision to retire from international football but will not be selected for the upcoming friendly in February

Given has been out of favour with club side Aston Villa so far this season, and the goalkeeper has told Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni that he is available for selection should he be required.

Trapattoni has turned to younger players since Given’s decision to retire with Sunderland’s Keiren Westwood replacing Ireland’s most-capped goalkeeper. (more…)
